Research Groups

Four research groups make up the SMI:

Biomedical Research

The Centre for Biomedical Engineering at the University of Surrey is one of the Engineering Research Groups. Based in the award-winning Duke of Kent Building, it has an international research record in osseointegration, human movement analysis, neural implant design, functional electrical stimulation for clinical applications, and AC electrokinetics. It also hosts one of the longest-established Biomedical Engineering MSc courses in the UK, and in 2003, began a new undergraduate programme in Medical Engineering.

MaSSS - Materials Surfaces and Structural Systems

The Materials Surfaces and Structural Systems research group lies within the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences at Surrey. It draws together established expertise in surface reactivity, surface analysis, ceramics, metals and alloys, underpinned by a thriving particle technology group. MaSSS is also home to the SMI Micro Structural Studies Unit (MSSU) which has a well-equipped suite of electron microscopes and analysis instrumentation, and The Surface Analysis Laboratory.

Materials Chemistry

The Materials Chemistry Group, including the Polymer Research Centre, specialises in the design, development, characterisation and application of advanced inorganic and polymeric materials.

SCM - The Soft Condensed Matter Physics Group

The research of the Soft Condensed Matter Physics Group at Surrey University focuses on the structure and dynamics of various phenomena in soft condensed matter.
